dissecting my work
"Emilia" was our College Film Production final project. When I designed it I first thought of oposite forces: Emilia, a spoiled girl who gets away with murder, Jorge, a hardworking loving father who feels depressed and underappreciated. I solved this with colour: pink and blue for Emilia's great life, pink on youth and love, but blue because of a hidden melancholy in the superficiality of her personality and the loss of her mom; mossy green, beige and grey for Jorge, on account of his monotonous life and tense jobless situation. As time passes and Emilia starts getting how hard life is, her outfits and makeup become "grey-er" and unsaturated.
Being a coming of age movie, I built everything around change, that's why food also plays a pivotal role: the first scene is a beautiful set up table prepared by Jorge, as tension grows, it feels more empty, colourless and colder; it ends with a once again beautiful setting, this time more modest (they don't need much, only each other's love) and reflecting Emilia's newly found love for her dad.
Sets also change, we see Jorge's room slightly deteriorating on each scene and Emilia's room feeling more and more overwhelming. Same efforts were made through makeup, hairstyling and costumes.
